About Matthew
Practice Focus

Matthew Leuty is a Veterans Disability Attorney at Berry Law who represents former service members seeking disability compensation from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Based in Omaha, he approaches each case with a service-based mentality rooted in the belief that every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. His work centers on listening carefully to clients, understanding their stated goals, and advocating in a way that helps them navigate a benefits system that can often feel difficult and frustrating. Matthew finds this work especially meaningful because it allows him to help people who sacrificed their health in service to the country pursue the compensation they are entitled to receive.

Role at Berry Law

At Berry Law, Matthew focuses on representing Veterans through the claims and appeals process with professionalism, empathy, and individualized attention. He aims to ensure that clients feel supported and understood at every step, combining legal analysis with a client experience grounded in respect and trust. He has said that any time he is able to help a client reach 100% permanent and total disability status, it is deeply rewarding. That perspective reflects the broader purpose he brings to this role: understanding that a successful VA outcome can materially change a Veteran’s quality of life and provide long-awaited stability.

Matthew’s advocacy style is shaped by a desire to listen first and act in each client’s best interests. He believes legal representation should not be impersonal or detached. Instead, he works to build trust with the people he serves so that clients know their concerns are being heard and their goals are being taken seriously. That people-centered approach aligns closely with Berry Law’s commitment to combining strong advocacy with thoughtful service.

Commitment to Advocacy

Although Matthew is not a Veteran himself, his decision to serve Veterans is rooted in a broader commitment to helping people through difficult legal systems. He has described the VA process as one that can be especially frustrating to navigate, even for those clearly entitled to benefits. That reality motivates him to provide steady, practical guidance and respectful advocacy to Veterans who may already feel worn down by delays, denials, or uncertainty.

Before joining Berry Law, Matthew demonstrated that same service-oriented mindset in other areas of legal advocacy. He previously practiced as a criminal defense attorney, work that reflected his longstanding commitment to standing beside individuals facing high-stakes legal challenges. During law school, he also served as a senior-certified law student in the Debtor’s Defense Clinic, where he helped struggling clients fight unfair debt-collection practices. One of his proudest accomplishments from that period was securing a dismissal for a mother of three who had been harassed by debt collectors after losing her job during the pandemic. He also contributed to drafting a bill that increased the homestead exemption in Nebraska, helping protect families from foreclosure over comparatively minor debts. Together, those experiences helped shape the empathy, persistence, and service-based mentality he now brings to representing Veterans.

Background & Interests

During law school, he built practical experience through client-facing advocacy and developed a legal style grounded in dignity, careful listening, and thoughtful representation. He also played baseball for the University of Nebraska, an experience that reflects the discipline and teamwork he brings to practice. Originally from Minnesota, Matthew has  traveled to 19 different countries, experiences that have broadened his perspective and deepened his appreciation for different people and cultures.

Outside of work, Matthew enjoys reading, exercising, traveling, playing sports, and exploring new bars and restaurants in Omaha. He brings the same curiosity, energy, and commitment to his personal life that he brings to his legal practice on behalf of Berry Law’s clients.
