John Berry, , CEO of Berry Law and Daniel Alarik, CEO of Grunt Style discuss how “tradition is the enemy of progress,” in this video on military lessons Veterans can use in the business world.
Alarik provides a great example to show why. A group of scientists had four monkeys in a cage with a banana on a rope hanging from the ceiling. One of the monkeys reaches for the banana and before he was able to get the banana, all four of the monkeys were hosed with water, making them wet and cold. Another monkey reaches for the banana and they all get hosed again. They were smart and did not reach for the banana again.
Then a scientist replaced one of the wet monkeys with a new dry monkey. The dry monkey reaches for the banana and all four of the monkeys get hosed again, resulting in a beating for the newest monkey. One by one each monkey gets replaced, getting beat up whenever someone reaches for a banana so none of the monkeys get hosed. As they all got replaced, none of them understood why they couldn’t reach for a banana. It was just how things were done. He finishes the story explaining how this is the perfect example of how tradition is the enemy of progress as it prevents growth and opportunity.
