Our History
Berry Law was founded in 1965 by attorney and Vietnam Veteran John Stevens Berry Sr. Since then, the firm has represented Veterans across the country and built a practice focused on serious legal advocacy, disciplined preparation, and service.
Over the years, Veterans from every branch of the military have turned to Berry Law for help with disability claims and appeals. That work remains a major part of the firm’s mission today.

Our Founder
Before founding Berry Law, John Stevens Berry, Sr. served three tours in Vietnam and earned the Bronze Star. During his service, he transferred from Infantry to the Judge Advocate General’s Corps and later served as chief defense counsel for one of the largest general court-martial jurisdictions in Vietnam.
Berry's story is incredible and he tells it in his memoir “Those Gallant Men: On Trial in Vietnam”. Green Berets working a covert mission in Vietnam were arrested and charged with the murder of a double agent. The 5th SFG(A) commander among them. Berry, a young JAG officer, defended them, quite skillfully, against not just the murder charges, but also the upper echelons of Army command in Vietnam. The entire story made headlines back in the US, involving the CIA and even the Whitehouse. Berry stood up for warriors in a tough spot and he made a difference. The charges against the Green Berets were dropped and they were exonerated.

After Vietnam, John focused on civil litigation and criminal defense while continuing to help Veterans facing legal and disability-related issues. Early in his career, he represented Vietnam Veterans dealing with legal problems associated with what is now known as post-traumatic stress disorder. He also represented Veterans pro bono before VA regional offices and the Court of Veterans Appeals.
Today, that commitment continues through the firm’s Veterans disability practice.
